Job markets improving at local level

While many consumers may be unhappy with the economy, the job market appears to be improving, at least at the local level, according to a poll from Harris Interactive. (Friday, February, 2012)

In January, 14 percent of adults felt that their home's region had a good job market situation - an increase from 9 percent in October, according to The Harris Poll. Americans who felt their region had a bad job market declined to 65 percent, which was a slight drop from October's figure of 67 percent.

The South region had the best percentage when it came to job market sentiment, as 16 percent affirmed they felt it had improved, according to the poll. The East witnessed a nearly identical response, with 15 percent. The West had the highest percentage of displeased consumers, as 71 percent expressed their disappointment. Additionally, two-thirds of Midwesterners polled stated they had a negative view of their region's market.

While mortgage originations recently declined, they have been improved through most of the end of 2011 and beginning of 2012. This could have something to do with unemployment, as the rate has been under 9 percent for several months.
